What is a diabetic eye exam?
Diabetic eye exams are essential for protecting your vision and detecting early
signs of diabetes-related eye conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Avakian provides

the eye. Regular monitoring helps catch issues early—often before symptoms appear—so we
can manage and treat them effectively. If you have diabetes, annual eye exams are a key part of
maintaining both your eye health and overall well-being
Medical eye exams go beyond checking vision—they focus on diagnosing and managing eye health conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and more. These exams are especially important for patients with chronic health issues or those experiencing symptoms like eye pain, floaters, or vision changes. With a focus on early detection and personalized care, we’re here to support your long-term eye health.

We recommend that you have your eyes examined every year in order to keep your eyes healthy. An annual exam can detect early signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy as well as high blood pressure, neurological disorders, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, and cardiovascular problems.
It is recommended that children have their first eye exam at six months of age and every year after that. We'd love to be your children's eye doctor!
We use symbols in place of letters and much of our evaluation require little input from the patient. During your child’s eye exam we focus on evaluating eye strength, muscle status, and eye health. We re able to obtain the critical information that we need to make an accurate diagnosis without your child saying a word.
Your vision generally will not get worse by wearing your prescription eye glasses. Be sure that the lenses or glasses you wear are the prescription recommended by your doctor.
Artificial tears temporarily mask the symptoms of dry eye. There is more than one type of dry eye. The doctor will determine the type of your dry eye using imaging and clinical techniques, then will start the appropriate treatments to help improve the symptoms of dry eye. There are different kinds of treatments including but not limited to heat therapy, medication to increase the tear production, punctal plugs and amniotic membranes.
Your disposable contact lenses will vary depending on your eyes, lifestyle, and the amount of time you are wearing them each day. We will evaluate your eye health and discuss the best schedule for you during your eye examination.
